Destruction of the Weedbeds

October 6th, 2009 · No Comments · Gardening, Pointless Updates

Wow, I had such a productive weekend!  I love that.

I also love those resolutions.  Nothing gets me motivated more than those, and they’ve directly resulted in getting so much done.  Even the resolutions about movie-watching and book-reading.  I clearly need deadlines and direction to complete my goals.

I cleaned out the garage on Saturday.  I put stuff on Freecycle and took a load of stuff to Goodwill, but I totally missed trash day this morning.  Grr.  Then I went and borrowed my dad’s truck to buy a load of mulch.  On Sunday, I made huge progress with the front and side yards, and filled up the back of his truck with weeds.  It was so embarrassing how high they’d gotten- the goldenrod and honeysuckle bush were taller than me.  I am such a lazy fucker sometimes.  But I made excellent progress.  The only good thing was that the goldenrod had pretty much killed everything underneath it, so now that it’s gone, it probably won’t take much work to cut the rest of it back.  The goal is to actually move the borders of the flowerbeds so that they’re closer to the house, then put in some low-maintenance shrubs and encourage the plants that are doing well, like the hostas.  In the front of the house, I pretty much emptied the thin strips of flowerbed that run between the sidewalks and the side of the house.  More shrubs needed there, and then some maintenance to keep the coneflowers from coming back.  I like coneflowers, but they look shitty 85% of the time.  For six weeks, they’re pretty.  Then they dry out and look like death.  I also killed two rose bushes.  I am proud of this.  (There are still at least four more that I haven’t killed.  I will let them live as a warning to others.)

On Sunday night, I went to see the Toy Story & Toy Story 2 in 3D double feature with my sister and her notboyfriend.  It was pretty great.  They started it off with an ad for Toy Story 3, which was fine enough, but it made me think, “Oh!  I love those movies.  Gosh, I really want to see those again.”  And then, duh, I realized I was actually at the theater to see those movies.  It was stupid.  And then I told my sister this, and she made fun of me.
