Well, here it is- the weekend that has been on the horizon for many months. I think there have only been a few times in my life that I can point to and say, “My life is definitively changing after that day, or that event.” But this is one of those weekends.
Tonight is Tracy’s graduation and tomorrow is Moving Day, Day One, followed by Moving Day, Day Two. It’s supposed to be a nasty hot muggy weekend, so the consensus from my unpaid moving help was that we should load and unload in the morning while it is still not miserable. Since a three-hour Budget truck drive lies between the loading and unloading, that means that they will have to take place on two different days. I would have preferred to do it all in the same day, but I need their help, so they win.
Also, they’re smarter than me because the heat index for tomorrow is 105-110 degrees, and no one should be doing any moving in 105 degree weather.
Lots of people are helping, possibly more people than completely necessary, because Tracy has moved most of the little shit to Kansas City already. The snow shovels, the kitchen stuff, the linens, the filing cabinets… all of that is already in KC. So it’s just the bulky furniture that will have to be packed into the van. Though, again, with the heat/humidity as a factor, no one will want to make more than a few trips with heavy stuff, so again, maybe we’re doing fine.
I tend to forget that I’m getting old when it comes to moving stuff. I tend to underestimate how much help I need, and how hot I’ll be, and how heavy all that furniture really is. So, yes, they’re all smarter than me and this is probably the best way of handling this move.
Tonight is the graduation. Tracy’s parents are heading into town as I write this, and we’re intending to do lunch with them once they get into town. I have to pick up the Budget truck right after work, then run home to put on a pretty dress and then make it over to the hotel ballroom where the event will be held by 6:00pm. That will be close. It should be a nice event, though. We went to the first two of them, but missed last year’s, and they are fancy but fun events.
Tracy has been kind of hard to handle in the past few days, with the winding down of some stuff and big changes on the immediate horizon. I don’t know how she’ll be this weekend, but I hope that everything goes as smoothly as can be expected.
