Oh Yeah, This Is Summer
This is why it’s hard to take summer in Missouri seriously until June 21, because the humidity doesn’t arrive until the end of June. In that entry the other week, I was all, “Summer starts in May!” and, yes, that’s true, but for a different reason. If you don’t start your summer in May, you’ll miss all the good weather.
In early June, you’re like, “Ah, summer! I love summer! Let me sit outside with a lemonade and read a book while the dog sits in the cool grass! Summer! Lovely!” And you wonder why you always hate summer so much, and why you never get anything done outside when you have all that lovely warm weather to do your outdoor work.
Then late June rolls around, and the thunderstorms start, and when it’s not pouring rain, you’re both baking in your clothes and also swimming through the streets because the humidity is so bad that you are constantly covered in a light layer of sweat even when you’re just sitting there, reading your book and drinking your lemonade. And the dog is looking at you like, “What the fuck? Can we go back inside and sit in the air conditioning now? I mean, seriously, lady, it is too fucking hot out here. I’m a dog, and I’m obviously cursing at you under my breath.”
That’s why you don’t get anything done between July and early September, because the idea of being outside is just ludicrous.
Anyway, June is almost over and summer is really just starting.
And my quarterly resolutions are due in less than a couple of weeks, I realized the other day! I’ve made good progress with books this quarter, but not with movies from the AFI list. I’ve read at least five books (thanks to the beach, and time spent in airports), but only one AFI movie. I found that a couple of the older, shorter AFI movies (Frankenstein and The General) were available on Netflix Watch Instantly, so I tried to watch them that way, but I think I fail to pay as close attention when I’m not actually seeing them on the television screen. So I don’t think I’m going to count them until another watch-through.
As far as other resolutions, I was prescient enough to understand that most of this quarter would be eaten up by Tracy’s move and the Florida trip, and I was right. Tracy’s move is just a week away now, and I think we’re both feeling a little sad and nostalgic about our time living together coming to an end. I’ve been spending more time petting the cats and she’s been spending more time petting the dog. Not that I won’t see the cats any more or whatever, but they won’t be living with me.
Tomorrow, we’re both going to Kansas City so that she can do some errands and I can set up her television and DVD and TiVO. The rest of the weekend, I’m working on photos except for Father’s Day when we’ll hang out with my dad for awhile too. Barbecue might be involved, and maybe swimming if it stays hot. All around fun times. Yay summer!
