Tracy and I are quickly becoming addicted to antique malls, thrift stores, and other treasure-hunting. We went out on Friday, Saturday, and Sunday this weekend, and have plans already to go out this next weekend.
I started a hunt for lamps last week, which turned out to be much harder than I thought it would be. I was used to looking through antique malls for furniture, and I was quite adept at seeing past all the tchotchkes everywhere to what was underneath, and assessing it in a couple of glances. But lamps turned out to often be hidden among the tchotchkes, so it took twice as long to get through.
Our Friday and Saturday trips were mostly in the area, although we went as far as Boonville. We came home with a picture for Tracy and a stack of used books. Yay!
On Sunday, we made a last-minute trip to St. Louis for a Trader Joe’s run with a stop by a couple of retro stores in the South City area. One of them, which I’d heard about, was fantastic. At some point, I will just have to borrow a truck and go over there and buy furniture (rather than the opposite- buy the furniture and return to pick it up) because I know I will find something I love there. I ended up with two matching lamps that were intended for the living room but suddenly look fantastic next to my bed. Awesome. I also discovered that the cool hutch piece that I bought two weeks ago for $90 in Jefferson City was on sale at this shop for $300 (regular price $400), and that was for just the bottom portion of the piece. I got the top part too. So it’s a pricey store, but I’m talking mostly about upholstered items, and those are hard to find in good shape.
I saw a post on Craigslist this morning for a chair that I loved; unfortunately, it was already gone when I emailed. I am still kind of depressed from that loss, and I didn’t even see the damn thing in person.
Addiction, indeed.
