Fun Fun Fun Til I Get Lost Somewhere in Iowa

October 3rd, 2008 · No Comments · Endless Blathering, Travel

Friday!  This begins a crazy road trip weekend.

Tracy is interviewing for fellowship programs around the country over the next couple of months, and her first interview is in Madison on Monday.  So we’re supposed to head up that direction.

But my grandma in Kansas City is having this annual family reunion party at her house tomorrow afternoon, and we’re expected there.

I would have just said no, but I did comparative Google maps on how long it would take to drive to Madison from Kansas City versus from Columbia, and it’s only a twenty minute difference (not including, of course, the two hour drive to Kansas City from Columbia).  This is because the interstate from Kansas City to Des Moines is a nice diagonal that cuts time, while the highway from Columbia either goes through St. Louis traffic or you’re on two-lane country roads.

So we’re first driving to Kansas City, and then we’re driving to Madison.

Oh, wait, did I mention Chicago?  We’re stopping in Chicago too.

No, Chicago isn’t exactly on the way, but Tracy has a friend there and we decided we’d just swing through there and have lunch.

Chicago.  On the road to Madison.

From Columbia.  By way of Kansas City.

If you’re to do a Google map of the route, it looks vaguely Z-shaped.

Something like this:

Wait… who came up with this plan? That looks like a stupendously idiotic plan.

Oh, me! I came up with that! That’s right.

The route back home will be much more direct. And it will all take place in the same afternoon/evening, because Tracy’s interview ends at 3pm and we’re both due back at work on Tuesday morning. So we’ll have to make it in one night. It’s about eight hours, I think.

There just better be a stop for a case of Sprecher root beer while in Wisconsin, that’s all I have to say.
