Customer Service & The Free Market- Times Fucking Select

July 31st, 2006 · No Comments · Rants/Raves

I have been trying to purchase TimesSelect for more than three weeks, and I cannot get it to work.  I am no longer at my Scary Job, which means that I don’t have easy access to the newspaper texts anymore.  Well, I can get the online versions, but with the New York Times, that doesn’t include the columnists.  And I really miss the columnists.  What can I say?  I love Maureen Dowd.  I do.  And I’m not ashamed of it.  Well, almost not ashamed of it.

But the New York Times is desperately trying to keep me from purchasing the product that they not only offer, but advertise heavily.  I don’t know why they would put themselves in the business of providing goods and services in exchange for money if they’re not willing to actually make the transaction happen.

Look, customer service people at New York Times Online, the typical way of doing business is to be all customer service oriented at the beginning!  Take my money, and then you provide the shoddy service!  This is really the best way of doing it.  To not take my money is to strip yourselves of the capability of providing the service at all.  By taking my money, you give yourselves the opportunity to provide the service but then you just disappoint me by not providing the service.

Do you see how this works?

The stupid thing is that this really isn’t even an issue.  I work for a university now, and I have access to these columnists (and much more) through the university library’s database connections and I can get all the Maureen Dowd fixes that I want.  The stupid thing, here, TimesSelect people, is that I only want to purchase your product for my own convenience, so that I don’t have to do the searches of the database just to read today’s columns.  I don’t actually need you!  I don’t actually have to give you my money!  It is because of my inefficient economics and bad money-spending habits that I am even trying to force my money into your hands, TimesSelect!  Do me the favor of taking that money, ok?

I’d give up, but that would be letting them win.
