Abbie's Real Life Blog

Hello world… again. Again.

I spent quite a while yesterday formulating my first blog post.  Pressed “save” and it vanished.  Great start!  Thank you.

Hi.  Welcome.  How’s it going?  I’m doing well.  This here is my first real attempt at starting a blog since my last one died in 2003.  That one, called Mindless Prattle, was not so much a blog as it was an online diary or journal, and I did write for a very long time, from 1997 to 2003.  From Ye Olde Days of the Web to the Modern Web.  Really, it was from the days of Lycos Search to the days of Google Search, and that’s what really changed the web.  It’s what ended my last blog, too, and it’s something I’m taking into account this time around.

See, I wrote the last one in a blind delusion of stupidity, assuming that I could write about anyone and anything and no one I knew would ever find it.  The web was a misty hazy jungle, and unless you knew what you were looking for and how to look for it, it was likely you wouldn’t chance upon my site.  That changed with Google, see, because suddenly it was all much more accessible.  And when my coworkers found my diary (and what I’d written about them), it turned into a huge mess.  Eventually I killed the diary and my domain name expired, and I let it go.

At the time (and I know this is all Ancient History, but I feel an explanation is in order, if only for myself), I was working at a Scary Job that didn’t allow me frequent access to the Internet.  I was also just coming out of the closet as a lesbian and starting to date a woman seriously.  And I was beginning a master’s degree.  One, two, three… add it up and subtract from it my free time to be writing up blogs.  Every now and then, I’d want to have the outlet again so badly that I’d start up a Xanga blog or a Blogger blog or something, but I’d fizzle out over a couple of days.

Fast forward to today, and I’ve finished my master’s, left my Scary Job, married my wife, and moved back to my Midwestern homeland.  I’ve started a new job (with Internet access!) and decided to start up a blog again, for reals this time, y’all.  So I bought a new domain name and here I am, with rules this time: no pretending that I don’t exist, and no writing naively- it can all be found and traced back to me.  Must play by Google Rules.  The Internet is much smaller these days.

Let’s see how this goes.
